Wooden Rocking Chair and Hanging file folders

Christmas Gifts and Projects

This year brought a short list of Christmas gifts and projects.

Wooden Hanging File Folder Crates:

I was emailed a picture from Target saying these would make a great Christmas gift. So using the dimensions in the picture I  built these for a Christmas present. After building a new jig for cutting finger joints, I used 1/2”  Poplar to build the boxes. The will hold standard 8 1/2 x 11 hanging file folders.

Child’s Rocking Chair:

White Oak and English Chestnut stain

Story Board:

This takes the concept of charting a child’s height to a whole  new level. I wanted to come up with a concept that would remove the measurements from the door frame/wall and  make it portable. Allowing it to be moved if the house was sold or when the child grew up and wanted to take it with  them.

The board is 1/2” x 7 1/2” x 4’ poplar mounted 2’ off the floor. This allows the child to grow to 6’ with enough space to write on the board. I then used the router to mark the inches and feet on the board. Becky then marked the feet numbers with permanent marker at 3, 4 and 5 foot measurements.

We then used 1/2” white oak to lay out the letters and I cut them on the band saw. Then I glued/screwed them to the board after staining with English Chestnut stain.

We painted the board with White chalk paint and sanded smooth to allow writing on the board.

Wow Rog!! They all look great!! You gave Jim the wood working bug again. He’s been doing some research and making some kind of vacuum system you talked about. He’s looking forward to some warmer weather so he can move out to the garage to do work. Personally, so am I. hehehe He told me he wants to make a murphy bed for the family room. I told him to start with something small 🙂 Keep up the good work.
